GRT Natural Resources Strategy
Natural Resources Strategy from GRT Capital
The investment objective of the GRT Natural Resources Strategy is to provide long-term growth of capital. In seeking to achieve the investment objective, GRT Capital invests primarily in equity securities of domestic and foreign companies in the natural resources and associated industries, and engages in a significant level of related options transactions. The strategy may invest in domestic and foreign securities of such companies of all sizes, from mega capitalization (greater than $100 billion) to micro capitalization (less than $250 million). The strategy also includes short positions.
The strategy encompasses investments in a number of natural resource and associated industries. The industries include companies engaged in the exploration, development and production of energy, energy sources, metals and other resources; the extraction, refining, processing, distribution, marketing, transportation and transmission of energy and natural resource products; research, experimentation, and development respecting such resources and products; ownership or control of leases, rights or royalty interests in such products; and manufacturing and industrial companies supplying and/or delivering equipment, components, parts or services related to such products.
The strategy may also include investments in industries which are less directly associated with natural resources, but which are affected by the supply and demand for natural resources, especially transportation companies of various kinds, including airlines and trucking companies. Alternative energy companies may also be included.
GRT Capital intends to run an active long-short portfolio and expects to employ what it deems to be prudent leverage. Among other things, GRT Capital expects to write put and call options to create long positions more cheaply or to create short positions at higher prices, or to partially hedge the portfolio in volatile conditions.
